About The Poconos
The Pocono Mountains is one of the most desirable
regions in the eastern United States. It is conveniently located to New
York City, Connecticut, New Jersey and Philadelphia. It offers a rural and
rustic setting with 150,000 acres of state and federal forest lands that
are full of wildlife and scenic wonders. The hiking trails abound with rhododendron
and hemlock groves where white-tail deer, black bear and wild turkey thrive.
The
Pocono Mountains is where you'll find Lake
Wallenpaupack, a spectacular 5,700 acre lake that is 13 miles long with
52 miles of shoreline. The region has many renown waterfall attractions,
such as Raymondskill Falls, Childs Park, Bushkill Falls and many more. The
National Park Service preserves 70,000 acres of forest lands along a 40
mile stretch of the Delaware River, which offers many miles of white water
rapids with some of the best rafting in the northeast United States.
Many visitors are amazed with the cultural activities
the Poconos has to offer. Grey Towers in Milford is a French chateau and
is a National Historic Landmark designed by Richard Morris Hunt. The Dorflinger
Glass Factory in Honesdale is famous for its "world renown" cut
glass. The Roebling Bridge along the Delaware River is the oldest suspension
bridge in America.
The
Pocono region also has a rich history. At the Wayne/Pike
Visitor Information Center in Greentown you will find information about
William Penn, including a survey map of the Wallenpaupack Manor, a 12,500
acre parcel of land deeded from the William Penn Estate in 1793 to James
Wilson, one of only six men who signed the Declaration of Independence in
1776 and the Constitution of the United States in 1787. Learn about John
F. Kennedy's trip to Milford in 1963 to dedicate the Pinchot Institute before
an audience of 10,000 just two months before his assassination. You'll find
information about a great Civil War train disaster that killed many confederate
soldiers.
